WHAT PROBLEMS CAN LISTERIA CAUSE?

Listeria, a bacteria found in soil, water, and various food sources, can pose significant health risks and lead to several problems when ingested. Ingestion of Listeria-contaminated food can result in a serious illness known as listeriosis.

This infection primarily affects individuals with weakened immune systems, including pregnant women, infants, the elderly, and those undergoing chemotherapy or organ transplantation. Listeriosis can manifest in multiple ways, ranging from mild symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, and diarrhea to more severe complications like meningitis, septicemia, and stillbirths in pregnant women.

Given its ability to survive and multiply in refrigerated environments, Listeria outbreaks have been linked to a variety of food products, including deli meats, soft cheeses, and contaminated vegetables.

Consequently, it is crucial to handle and store food properly to minimize the risk of Listeria contamination and subsequent health problems.
